Yep, an email from "email administration" or somesome thing at LavaNet
with an attachment. Saw that before the email warning not to open such
mails, but then I never open an email with an attached application, no
matter who is claiming to send it.

Ah yes, the W32/***@MM virus. I got at least 3 of those so far.

I haven't seen this version but one message that got me rolling
was this:

Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled
because of unauthorized access

Well if your email account is disabled how in the world are
you going to get this message?

I know who can answer that question, Helen. The person at Verizon
who came up with "press 1 if you have no dial tone." ;)

obviously it was the last message before disable,
probably the one that disabled your e-mail by
installing a virus

Or the person at Micro$oft who came up with the classic DOS error
message: "No Keyboard Detected! Press F1 to continue".

If your PC gets infected with a virus, the correct method to recover
a working system is to boot KNOPPIX from CD and use it to mount your
winDOwS partitions in order to back them up, then install KNOPPIX
on your hard drive after formatting and partitioning, thereby preventing
future infections and giving you a stable system upon which to restore
your data from backups.

Darn straight! (KNOPPIX, for anyone who's unfamiliar with it, is a Linux
distribution. A bootable KNOPPIX CD has helped me fix some serious SNAFUs
on Windows NT servers, since it can often give me access to things that NT
can't access after it screws itself up. :)

I got one of those this morning, along with four other variations which
supposedly had come from LavaNet. Some are more clever than others. The
one which says there have been complaints about spam coming from your
address is best. I almost replied to that one, letting LavaNet know it is
not my computer, but one of UH-Manoa's. Still wouldn't have opened the
attachment, of course.

I got one claiming to be from "staff" at one of my own domains, telling
me that (whatever) had happened and oh yeah, I should open this attachment.
Funny... I couldda sworn the only "staff" at that domain was... me! :)

Well, fortunately for its customers, LavaNet has more staff than me.

all these inane attempts to pose as such-and-***@lava.net)
